AWF Endorses Rep. Feeney's COMP Act
July 9, 2008
Dear Republican Study Committee Member,
On behalf of the Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF), I urge you to become an original co-sponsor of the Competitive Open Market Protections Act (COMP) which Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) is preparing to introduce.
This bill will promote efficiency and savings through the increased use of competitive sourcing and other privatization methods. Currently, the private sector is allowed to compete with the government in only about 11 percent of its commercial undertakings. While this has yielded savings of over $7 billion since 2003, there is still a large amount of wasteful spending which can be eliminated through the responsible use of competitive sourcing.
The COMP act seeks to eliminate this waste by requiring competition in all commercial government activities with the exception of those which are either inherently governmental or must be provided by government for purposes of national security.
A recent report by the Office of Management and Budget conclusively illustrates competitive sourcing has been effective at saving tax dollars. When administration costs are taken into account, the return on investment for these initiatives is roughly $30 for each $1 spent, or $25,000 per position studied. By expanding competitive sourcing to an increased number of commercial government activities, the COMP act will do much in the way of ensuring taxpayers receive the best value for their dollar.
Support for this measure echoes a belief in the limited, efficient government which forms the cornerstone of conservative principles. Therefore, I urge you to become and original co-sponsor of the Competitive Open Market Protections Act (COMP) to be offered by Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL).
If you are interested in co-sponsoring this legislation, please contact Erin Kanoy in Rep. Feeney’s office at e.kanoy@mail.house.gov or 202.225.2706.
Sincerely,
Brian M Johnson, MPA
