AWF Will Rate “YES” Vote on DeMint Amendment to Labor-H
AWF Urges Support for DeMint Amendment to S. 1710

The Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF), urges all Senators to support Sen. DeMint’s amendment to S. 1710, the Labor-H Appropriations that strikes two non-competitive earmarks totaling $3.7 million for the AFL-CIO.

It is clearly stated in the bill:

“That $1,500,000 shall be for a non-competitive grant to the AFL-CIO Working for America Institute, which shall be awarded not later than 30 days after the date of enactment of this Act: Provided further, That $2,200,000 shall be for a non-competitive grant to the AFL-CIO Appalachian Council, Incorporated, for Job Corps career transition services, which shall be awarded not later than 30 days after the date of enactment of this Act” (S.1710, pages 4-5).

  • These funds were not requested by the Department of Labor and represent a clear abuse of the earmarking process. If Congress wants to help dislocated workers, it should allow the Department to competitively award the funds to organizations that can best accomplish the agency’s mission.
  • The DeMint amendment would strike the two AFL-CIO earmarks totaling $3.7 million and replace them with competitive grants. This will require the organizations to compete for funding based on their merits.
