The Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF) strongly urges all Senators to oppose Amendment #4147 to the supplemental spending bill which would force state and local governments to collectively bargain with first responders.

Inserted by Sen. Reid, Amendment #4147 mandates that city governments engage in forced bargaining with labor unions representing public safety officers and emergency first responders.

Such clear and egregious consolidation of powers is expressively forbidden in the United States Constitution, and is without precedent in the history of federal labor law.

Congress has a solid record of not interfering in labor matters which have always been left up to capable state governments. This issue has been considered an un-crossable line until now.

Given that union bosses often encourage and push for strikes over supercilious circumstances to further their own personal agendas, consider the repercussions of an emergency first responder, police or fire strike in your home state, or perhaps even your neighborhood.

The burden this will place on states is evident from the recent bankruptcy filling of Vallejo, California, where the $16 million deficit stems from unsuccessful negotiations with its public safety workers whose salaries compromise 74 percent of the city’s general fund budget.

A vote of this magnitude deserves full legislative consideration on the floor – not slipped in a supplemental spending bill. AWF urges you to vote “no” on Amendment #4147.
