The FBI and the U.S. Labor Department (DOL) have begun investigating prominent union figure Andy Stern over a 2006 large book contract he received and his role in allocating union funds to an SEIU leader who allegedly performed no work. The FBI and DOL investigations come only months after the Alliance for Worker Freedom spurred federal prosecutors to probe SEIU and Andy Stern over potentially illegal lobbying activities.

“Since its inception SEIU, led by Andy Stern, has been mired in controversy. Andy Stern’s aggressive by any means necessary approach has put the union in precarious situations more than once. That the Department of Labor and FBI are investigating the former union head is not at all surprising,” said Christopher Prandoni, Executive Director of the Alliance for Worker Freedom.

After deregistering as a lobbyist, Andy Stern visited the White House more than any other person and was appointed to the president’s Deficit Commission, a position he still holds. The federal inquiry investigating potentially illegal payments to union leaders comes just months before SEIU plans to spend nearly $50 million getting mostly Democrats elected.

“The Obama Administration really embraced Stern from the get go, a surprising move since he is such a controversial figure. The amount of money SEIU has spent over the past five years—the union has contributed over a hundred million dollars to help Democrats build their large majorities—is extremely disconcerting given federal agencies repeated investigations into SEIU practices,” Prandoni Added.
