Gov. Daniels, Friend of the Indiana Worker
AWF Commends Daniels’ Privatization Efforts

Washington, D.C. — The Alliance for Worker Freedom (AWF), on behalf of employees nation-wide commends Republican Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels for privatizing the state’s welfare programs, despite harsh union opposition.

“Leaders like Daniels,” says AWF’s Policy Director Brian Johnson, “are what America needs to stand up to Big Labor and support workers rights. By having a track record that includes ending abusive collective bargaining rights within days of taking office and now privatizing state services, Daniels has a proven history of saying ‘no’ to union intimidation and ‘yes’ to upholding employee freedom.”

Currently, Governor Daniels signed a deal privatizing the administration of Indiana’s welfare and food stamp programs to a consortium led by IBM. Privatization, a method of transferring the responsibility of a service that was previously provided by the government to the private sector is widely debated. However, proponents of this effort use the increased efficiency that privatization yields as central to their argument.

“In an effort to reduce spending, decrease taxes and limit government intervention in a free market, privatization is on of the surest routes. Daniels’ efforts, not just on privatization, but with collective bargaining and transparency, are key to ensuring Indiana employees are free to live and work in the most efficient manner possible,” adds Johnson.
