Michigan: Prevailing Wage Law Plan Alarming Local Businesses

According to the Lansing State Journal:

A proposed prevailing wage ordinance continues to make area businesses and developers jittery even though it's stalled - at least temporarily - in the bureaucracy of Lansing City Hall.

Trade unions have pushed the proposed ordinance as a way to promote the local construction industry. It would require that construction workers on most projects that get local tax incentives be paid the prevailing wage - essentially, union wages.

Even the prospect of such an ordinance is spooking some in the business community. At least two developers with proposed downtown projects have publicly said the ordinance, if passed, could doom their plans.

Software maker TechSmith Corp. is adding its voice to the overall concern. The company, currently based in Okemos, said in January it planned to build a new headquarters in Lansing, bringing more than 200 high-tech jobs into the city...click to continue.
