Officials: Unions Struggling, but Still Important
Safety regulations, child labor laws and the eight-hour workday are all historical victories achieved by the labor movement - a movement that is struggling today, especially in Texas, local labor union officials say. They said they are working hard to keep the movement alive in a right-to-work state.
On Monday, they held a Labor Day picnic, celebrating past accomplishments as well as looking toward the future of the movement. "There's a lot of obstacles for the whole labor movement," said Billy Martinez, chairman of Lubbock's Central Labor Council, which represents about 2,000 workers in the county.
