Pro-Worker Group Applauds Gov. Christie (R-NJ) for Limiting Union Donation Amounts
On his first day in office, Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) issued an Executive Order that limits the amount of money unions, which have state contracts, can donate to political campaigns. Under pre-Christie law, companies that had state contracts worth more than $17,500 were barred from donating more than $300 to statewide campaigns while unions had no such constraint.
Speaking to this point, Governor Christie said:
It’s been unfair to the state of New Jersey to have one set of people who do business with the state be able to continue to contribute to campaigns, while another group of people can’t. The idea of pay-to-play (reform) is to level the playing field.
Christie campaigned as a reformer promising to bring transparency to New Jersey, a state notorious for its corruption. Curbing union donation amounts represents Christie’s first step in a bold agenda which looks to bring fairness and accountability to New Jersey’s politicians.
“Governor Christie is doing exactly what New Jersey’s residents elected him to do, clean up the state. New Jersey’s old system was not only unfair but fostered the quid pro quo system that got the state into a $1 billion deficit,” said Brian Johnson, Executive Director of the Alliance for Worker Freedom. Johnson added, “Other Governors would do well to follow Christie’s lead and enact similar rules.”
The Alliance for Worker Freedom is sending letters to every Governor urging them to enact similar legislation.
