West Virginia: Prevailing Wage, A Mystery Worth Unraveling

According to WTRF-TV:

First things first: I have known Father Thomas S. Acker since 2001. I worked for him for a year at Forward Southern West Virginia, which is based in Beckley. I respect him. I know him to be a good man -- someone who has worked for more than eight years to improve the quality of life in several southern West Virginia counties.

He now is engaged in a lengthy discussion about the way the state of West Virginia establishes its prevailing wage rate, which determines how much developers must pay workers involved in certain public construction projects. He said he has entered the dialogue as a way to learn.

Many of us are learning with him, although more than a few in the building business already know all they want to know about prevailing wage in West Virginia.

Acker uses the tools available to him to accomplish the goals he has identified to benefit southern West Virginia. Government money has been one of those tools, and he has had success. Before moving to Beckley, Acker served for 18 years as president of Wheeling Jesuit University.
